Australia captain Pat Cummins suffered a chastening afternoon with the ball as South Africa engineered a magnificent lower-order resurrection on day three of the second Test at St George’s Park. The skipper finished with figures of 0-96, the second most expensive wicketless haul of his Test career, bettered only by his 0-101 against India at Sydney in 2019.
The profligate return came as the hosts rallied from a precarious 110-6 to declare on 425-9, seizing control of the match after a dramatic shift in momentum. South Africa’s tail wagged with historic ferocity, adding 315 runs after the loss of their sixth wicket—the second-highest such aggregate in Test history. Only their own 318-run stand against Australia at the MCG in 2008 surpasses it, while Australia have conceded more only once: the 363 runs leaked to the West Indies at Bridgetown in 1955.
The recovery was sparked by captain Temba Bavuma, who crafted a career-best 179, ably supported by Marco Jansen (85) and a remarkable debut half-century from Simon Harmer (82). The trouble began early when Wiaan Mulder fell for 13 to Mitchell Starc, claiming his 450th Test wicket. Bavuma and Jansen steadied the ship with a 132-run seventh-wicket stand before Scott Boland (5-81) broke through to dismiss Jansen.
Harmer then joined his captain, and the pair turned the match on its head with a marathon 183-run eighth-wicket partnership. Harmer struck ten fours and a six in his maiden Test fifty before falling bowled to Marnus Labuschagne. Bavuma, having reached his fifth Test century off 226 balls and surpassed his previous best of 172, eventually fell to Starc, prompting the declaration.
Australia’s woes compounded late in the day when Nic Maddinson was trapped lbw for a four-ball duck by Kagiso Rabada, leaving the tourists reeling at 3-1 at stumps. Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 following their 214-run victory in Durban.
