Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) once appeared destined for obsolescence amid the global shift toward electric vehicles, given its historical reliance on heavy-duty combustion engines for trucking. However, a dramatic pivot has emerged: those same engines are now critical for powering the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom. Surging investment in AI data centers has revitalized demand for Cummins’ power generation technology, positioning the company as a key beneficiary of the hyperscaler build-out.

AI Infrastructure Investment Drives Power Systems Growth

Despite the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, the technology remains fundamentally dependent on reliable electricity. The aggressive expansion of AI platforms by hyperscalers—projected to reach $750 billion in infrastructure spending by 2026—has strained existing grid capacity, creating an urgent need for independent power solutions.

Grid constraints have forced major operators to develop dedicated power generation. For instance, Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) constructed a natural gas plant to support its Colossus I and Colossus II data centers. Cummins is addressing this need by supplying backup and prime power solutions for AI facilities.

While Cummins’ traditional engine segment grew 6%, its power systems division reported a 19% year-over-year revenue increase in the second quarter of 2026. The company is leveraging decades of experience providing off-grid power to remote industries like mining, repurposing proven generator technology for the data center market.

Expanding Beyond Backup Power

Cummins is actively expanding its portfolio beyond emergency backup systems—which have driven initial AI-related demand—toward continuous prime power solutions for data centers lacking grid access. This strategy mirrors its approach in the mining sector and could unlock further growth as AI infrastructure investment accelerates.

Valuation remains a consideration; Cummins currently trades at approximately 30 times earnings, significantly above its five-year average of 17.5x. Investors confident in the long-term AI infrastructure trajectory may view the premium as justified, though careful due diligence is warranted.
