Curry Barker, the director behind the hit horror film Obsession, has expressed a desire to release an extended version of the movie featuring 20 minutes of additional footage.
Written and directed by Barker, Obsession premiered earlier this year and has since evolved into one of the most successful independent films in history. Despite a modest production budget of $750,000, the film has amassed over $525 million at the global box office.
In an interview with Rolling Stone regarding a potential alternate cut, Barker noted, “I think I’m pretty happy with the cut right now. There’s not things I would change with the footage that I have. But I would say there’s a longer version of the movie that I would love to release for sure.”
Barker confirmed he has approximately 20 minutes of extra footage available, though he maintained that the current theatrical release should be considered his primary vision. “I did what I wanted for the most part,” he clarified.
The film serves as a modern take on the “monkey-paw” horror subgenre, following the character Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, as she develops an intense fixation on Bear, played by Michael Johnston, after a wish takes a dark turn.
Navarrette, who has emerged as the film’s breakout star, recently indicated she is “totally open” to returning for a sequel if Barker decides to pursue one.
Reflecting on the character’s trajectory following the film’s conclusion, the actress offered a more profound perspective on Nikki’s journey. “I think the non-pretty answer, which I think is more important to give sometimes than kind of just giggling through answers, is she’s starting a grief process,” Navarrette explained.
“When things happen that are completely out of our control, like losing a loved one, losing a parent, losing autonomy, having an experience that wasn’t your fault, it’s very difficult to understand anything. She’s just starting the grief process.”
