Czechia Overwhelm Great Britain to Reach Billie Jean King Cup Semi-Finals

Great Britain crashed out of the Billie Jean King Cup at the quarter-final stage, succumbing to a formidable Czechia side in a one-sided encounter.

Sonay Kartal, playing her first match following a six-month injury absence, pushed Marie Bouzková to the limit before falling 7-6(7-2), 4-6, 6-4 in a gruelling three-hour contest.

The defeat placed the onus on British No. 1 Katie Boulter to keep the tie alive against Olympic champion and world No. 6 Linda Nosková, but the Czech star proved too strong, securing a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory to seal the tie.

Captain Anne Keothavong’s squad faced a daunting task on paper; every member of the Czech roster held a superior singles ranking to their British opponents. Czechia entered the Finals as the only nation boasting two top-10 players in Nosková and world No. 8 Karolína Muchová.

The 2-0 scoreline rendered the doubles dead rubber unnecessary, though Great Britain would likely have confronted the formidable world No. 1 Kateřina Siniaková—an 11-time Grand Slam doubles champion and reigning US Open titleholder.

The loss marks Great Britain’s earliest exit from the competition since 2023, extending the nation’s wait for a maiden title in the ‘World Cup’ of women’s tennis.

Despite the result, there were positive takeaways, most notably from world No. 127 Kartal. Having missed the majority of the season with a lower back injury, she demonstrated trademark resilience against an opponent ranked 101 places her senior.

Boulter could do little to stem the tide in the second rubber; despite a spirited second-set fightback, she was overwhelmed by an in-form Nosková, who struck 15 aces and landed 71 per cent of her first serves.

Barbora Strýcová’s Czech side, 11-time champions and favourites to lift the trophy for the first time since 2018, will now meet either Kazakhstan—without newly crowned US Open champion and world No. 1 Elena Rybakina—or Spain in the semi-finals.
