The Dallas Stars have finalized a one-year contract with star winger Jason Robertson, marking the conclusion of a contentious contract negotiation period.

The agreement, valued at $12 million for the upcoming season, will place Robertson in unrestricted free agent status for the next offseason, altering the trajectory of his career and the team’s strategic planning.

Nill had reportedly drawn a clear boundary in the negotiations, unwilling to offer a salary exceeding that of teammate Mikko Rantanen, who is under an eight-year contract with an annual average value (AAV) of $12 million. Robertson’s initial request was reportedly in the range of $14 million annually, reflecting his status as a premier offensive talent.

The decision to avoid arbitration aligns with a similar strategy employed by Robertson’s brother, Nick Robertson, who recently secured a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins, thereby evading a potential public arbitration hearing.

This one-year deal not only resolves the immediate contractual obligations but also provides the Stars with the flexibility to reassess Robertson’s market value after the season. His eligibility to negotiate a long-term extension on January 1, 2024, offers additional strategic opportunities for the organization to cement his future in Dallas.
