Former Australia opener David Warner has ignited considerable debate among cricket enthusiasts following his announcement of preferred top batters across international formats. Rather than relying on globally established superstars, Warner identified three standout performers from the current generation.
Warner announced his preferences on Sunday in response to a survey conducted by the England Barmy Army, which asked supporters to select their preferred batter for Test, ODI, and T20I cricket.
Warner’s Surprise Choice for Test Cricket
The most notable selection was Harry Brook as Warner’s leading Test batter.
Brook has cemented his status as one of England’s most impactful red-ball players since his Test debut in 2022. While his aggressive style defines his game, his statistics prove he can also transform starts into significant totals.
The England player has amassed over 3,600 Test runs at a batting average above 53, featuring 10 centuries. His career-best knock of 317 against Pakistan stands as a defining innings in his relatively young Test tenure.
Warner’s choice is notable because Test cricket conversations are historically dominated by veterans like Joe Root and Steve Smith. Opting for Brook instead underscores Warner’s high regard for the emerging generation of international batters.
Warner’s ODI Choice
In the ODI format, Warner selected India captain Shubman Gill.
Gill’s consistency in the 50-over game has secured his place as a cornerstone of India’s batting lineup. He currently leads the ICC ODI batting rankings and has built a formidable record despite his relative youth in international cricket.
The right-hander has recorded more than 3,700 ODI runs, comprising 11 centuries and 20 half-centuries. His most recent major milestone was a blistering unbeaten 223 against the West Indies in Guwahati, marking the highest individual score ever recorded during an ODI chase.
Gill’s capacity to blend classical strokeplay with controlled aggression has established him as a key figure in India’s ODI strategy.
Warner’s Preference in T20Is
Warner’s third choice was another Indian opener, Abhishek Sharma, for T20I cricket.
The left-hander has rapidly built a reputation for attacking bowling from the very first ball. His exceptional strike rate and risk-taking mindset have made him one of the most thrilling young batters in global T20 cricket.
Abhishek has already compiled over 1,900 T20I runs, including three centuries. His career-high T20I score is 135, and his explosive method consistently puts opposing bowling units under pressure.
Recent form has further solidified his standing. During the Asian Games 2026 final against Pakistan, Abhishek contributed a swift 61 off 28 deliveries, helping India set a competitive total before ultimately winning the gold medal.
