Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has indicated a preference for playing Dejan Kulusevski as a number 10 as the Swedish international approaches his long-awaited return to action.
Kulusevski has been absent for over 500 days following a major knee injury sustained in May 2025, a period that has deprived Spurs of one of their most influential attacking talents.
However, the 26-year-old has recently rejoined full team training, signaling that his competitive return is imminent.
Ahead of Tottenham’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Manchester United, De Zerbi has detailed his tactical plans for reintegrating Kulusevski into the squad.
De Zerbi details preferred position for Kulusevski

Speaking prior to Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford, De Zerbi explained his tactical vision for the playmaker, noting his versatility across the attacking line:
“Winger or number 10. I prefer him as a number 10, but Kulusevski is a football player who can play everywhere.”
While Kulusevski previously made his mark as a dynamic threat from the right wing, his technical precision, close control, and creative intelligence make him an ideal candidate for a central role.
De Zerbi’s approach suggests he intends to utilize Kulusevski as the primary creative engine operating behind the forward line, a role that could allow the Swede to more effectively link the midfield to the attack and influence the tempo of matches.
De Zerbi praises Kulusevski’s resilience after long injury layoff
In addition to his tactical utility, De Zerbi lauded Kulusevski’s mental fortitude during his lengthy rehabilitation process.
The forward has been sidelined for over 500 days following a severe patella injury in his right knee sustained in May 2025.
“It’s inspirational because, like I said, he reacted very well with character, with courage, with passion,” De Zerbi remarked.
“We have to take inspiration from Deki. I said this in the meeting with my players.
“As a player, I suffered many times from long injuries. The injury is bad because you lose football, but it’s nice because you come inside yourself and you know yourself better than before the injury.
“You can start communicating with yourself better, you find the motivation, you find the target, you find the goal, you become stronger.”
To assist with his integration, De Zerbi has even arranged for Kulusevski to travel with the squad for the Manchester United match to support the team in a non-playing capacity.
Kulusevski’s return viewed as a major boost for Spurs
The reintegration of Kulusevski is expected to feel like a major new acquisition for De Zerbi, as Tottenham desperately look to rectify a difficult start to their campaign.
Spurs currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after failing to secure a victory in their first five league outings.
Kulusevski’s recent involvement in full-scale training matches at Hotspur Way confirms that his return to the pitch is fast approaching.
His ability to resist pressure and create scoring opportunities from central areas could be the catalyst Tottenham need to unlock defenses and climb out of their current slump.
