Deadpool Interrupts Marvel’s Comic-Con Panel to Campaign for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Spot

Ryan Reynolds brought his signature meta-humor to San Diego Comic-Con, crashing the Avengers: Doomsday panel in a bid to join the Marvel Studios ensemble.

While the film’s star-studded creative team — including directors Anthony and Joe Russo and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige — presented onstage Saturday, Reynolds emerged from the audience wearing Deadpool’s gray X-Force suit, a costume variant yet to debut on screen. The Disney tentpole is slated for a Dec. 18 theatrical release.

Adopting the persona of “Ricky” and claiming he was “cosplaying hard,” Reynolds directed his first quip at Paul Rudd: “Where is Thor, and why was he crying?” The line referenced a pivotal 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine sequence in which Chris Hemsworth’s Thor cradles a dying Wade Wilson in a flash-forward scene.

Rudd parried with a jab at Reynolds’ ownership of Wrexham AFC: “He’s a Wrexham fan?” Reynolds shot back, “You know goddamn well why he was crying.”

Not missing a beat, Deadpool added, “This seems like an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming?” Robert Downey Jr., returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom after originating Tony Stark, retorted, “It’s in the can, bro. Look around you. Did you bump your head?”

After a theatrical pause, a deflated Deadpool conceded, “I see. So there’s no additional photography, no overages, hot costs — maybe last minute additions?” He then broke character abruptly: “No further questions. Happy Hogan, fetch the Audi. We’re leaving.” Reynolds dropped the microphone and exited Hall H to raucous applause.

While Marvel has not officially confirmed Deadpool for Avengers: Doomsday, speculation has persisted since the character’s MCU arrival. The anti-hero’s most recent outing, Deadpool & Wolverine opposite Hugh Jackman, crossed $1.3 billion globally. Earlier this month at Fanatics Fest, Reynolds affirmed that another Deadpool installment is in development.

The panel also unveiled other major announcements: Ryan Gosling will headline a Ghost Rider film directed by Shawn Levy, and Black Panther 3 writer-director Ryan Coogler revealed David Jonsson has been cast as T’Challa’s adult son for the 2028 release.
