Death From Above 1979 Unveil Six‑Year Gap Album ‘Private Lives’ with New Single and North American Tour

Death From Above 1979 have unveiled ‘Private Lives’, their first studio album in six years, alongside details of a new North American tour and the debut single.

The album follows their 2021 release Is 4 Lovers and is scheduled for release on January 29 through Last Gang/MNRK, the duo’s longtime label.

Musically, the record promises a revitalized sound, crafted after a series of retrospective shows that marked the 20th anniversary of You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine and the 10th anniversary of The Physical World.

“Playing the old songs every day really inspires us to create something new,” Keeler said. Grainger added, “After those anniversary shows we felt both tired of celebrating ourselves and reconnected with the band’s core sound.”

Most of the tracks stem from previously unreleased demos that the band has revived and reworked.

Discussing the album’s creation, Grainger recalled: “When we first started making music, it was as simple as heading to the basement—a physical, spontaneous extension of hanging out together. Over time, the process grew more deliberate.”

“The key is remembering what makes it fun and special. Our sound balances sweet and sour—heavy yet tender and playful—and we thrive when we embrace those contradictions.”

Released today (Tuesday, September 29), the lead single offers a first taste of the album, exploring the desire for privacy in an age of constant exposure.

“We often feel pressured—by each other and by society—to share our most private thoughts. More often than not, this feeds into a shallow consumer feedback loop,” the duo said about the track.

“Ultimately, it’s just a hard‑driving rock song with frenetic riffs,” they added. “The ten‑track Private Lives LP renews our devotion to the raw, industrial power of electricity—we never do things by halves. Like Kim Bodnia’s dance in the video, it’s all‑or‑nothing for us.”

To mark the album’s release, Death From Above 1979 have announced a spring North American tour.

The tour begins February 2 in Tempe, Arizona, with subsequent shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Brooklyn, Boston, Seattle and other cities throughout the month. Ticket information and the full schedule are provided below.

Their 2021 album Is 4 Lovers earned a four‑star rating from NME, which called it “their best effort since the debut.” The review noted that the duo “tackle love and modern society on their gritty fourth record, delivering a punch that now leaves a more colorful bruise.”

In an interview with NME surrounding that release, Grainger said Is 4 Lovers marked a thematic return to the concerns of You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine.

“This record finds me turning inward rather than looking outward, as I had on the previous two albums,” he said. “I connected it to our early work because, at that time, my world was limited to my close circle.”

“The 2002 Heads Up EP and our debut album drew from my family, friends, and Toronto nightlife. My goal was to write songs that mattered to me, hoping they would resonate with others. I’ve returned to that approach.”
