Defensive Vulnerabilities and Youth Focus: Liverpool’s Transfer Window Sparks Concern

Liverpool have conceded twice in their opening league fixtures, with manager Arne Slot likely concerned by the ease with which their defense has been breached.

Defensively, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are out with long-term injuries, while Joe Gomez’s pre-season setback prompted the club to loan in Lucas Araujo from Barcelona.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan is currently an interim solution, though Liverpool hold an option to purchase him for £47m next summer as Virgil van Dijk’s contract is nearing its end.

Meanwhile, Leoni, 19, and Jacquet, 21, are considered internally among Europe’s brightest young centre-backs. Liverpool possess significant depth in this area, further bolstered by promising teenagers like Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who impressed during pre-season.

The acquisition of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Genk, in a deal potentially worth up to £30m, is another long-term investment. Bayern Munich also coveted the 6ft 7in Belgian, and with Alisson’s contract expiring next summer and Giorgi Mamardashvili yet to make a significant impression, Brughmans could step in for the 2027-28 season. A product of the Genk academy that nurtured Thibaut Courtois, he represents a future contender.

Milos Kerkez has struggled early in the campaign at left-back, though hopes remain that he will thrive under Arne Slot, having previously worked with the manager at Bournemouth.

On the right flank, Jeremie Frimpong has yet to convince, and Liverpool reportedly missed out on bringing Malo Gusto in on loan from Chelsea on deadline day.

Liverpool are prepared to wait for Bradley’s return from his knee injury, though the right-back position remains a concern. Araujo is capable of filling in at right-back, as is Dominik Szoboszlai if required.

In midfield, Arne Slot suggested it was not a personnel issue when Newcastle twice exploited Liverpool on the counter at St James’ Park.

However, former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, commentating as a pundit, asserted that his former club has required a defensive midfielder for three years.

Liverpool have lacked a genuine number six since Fabinho departed in 2023, yet senior club figures remain satisfied with the current midfield options.

Both Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch signed new long-term contracts this year, while Alexis Mac Allister, despite interest from Manchester City, is staying. Slot will also have Wataru Endo and 19-year-old Trey Nyoni available.

It is understood that any permanent signing in midfield will only occur in January or next summer. Liverpool did evaluate Lamine Camara but there was no intention to purchase a midfielder this summer.

The average age of Liverpool’s first-team signings over the past two windows is 22, indicating a long-term strategy at Anfield. However, given their struggles in their opening two matches, the squad appears as though it could have benefited from more additions this summer.

The club’s Champions League campaign commences on 10 September, meaning a demanding schedule of two games per week for much of the season, presenting a new challenge for the manager.

Liverpool believe they will be better positioned once injured players return, but only time will tell if this squad possesses the depth to compete on all four fronts.
