Two people were killed and two others injured in a crash at a Delta mall on Wednesday, which police believe may have resulted from a medical emergency. The incident was unrelated to nearby National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events.
Delta police reported that the injured were treated on-site and transported to a hospital.
A community march for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was underway nearby on Tsawwassen First Nation lands, though police confirmed the crash had no connection to the event.
Online video from the scene depicted a truck against the exterior of the Tsawwassen Mills shopping center, surrounded by police tape, ambulances, and a helicopter in the parking lot.
The Tsawwassen First Nation expressed deep sadness over the incident in a statement but declined to release further details out of respect for the families and ongoing response efforts.
Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on September 30, honors Indigenous children who died in government-funded, church-run residential schools, along with survivors, their families, and communities. The federal holiday was established in 2021.
