Dennis Hauger Secures Multi-Year Deal with AJ Foyt Racing After Rookie of the Year Honor

Winning the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year Award proved lucrative for Dennis Hauger, who on September 16 secured a multi‑year contract with AJ Foyt Racing.

Hauger finished his rookie campaign with Dale Coyne Racing under a one‑year agreement, and AJ Foyt Racing confirmed that his new contract spans multiple seasons.

Hauger will take over the No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet, a ride formerly held by Santino Ferrucci of Woodbury, Connecticut. Ferrucci piloted the car full‑time from 2023 to the end of 2026, placing ninth in the 2024 standings before dropping to 16th in 2025 and 17th in 2026.

Ferrucci is noted for cracking the top ten in every Indianapolis 500 he has entered since 2019. He finished third in the 2023 Indy 500 after leading 11 laps and was in contention for the victory on the final restart before Josef Newgarden claimed his first back‑to‑back win.

Dennis Hauger’s 2026 Achievements

Although Hauger ended his rookie year 22nd overall, he secured the final Leader’s Circle spot for Dale Coyne Racing, unlocking a $1.7 million payout. His best qualifying effort came with a third‑place start at the season‑opening St. Petersburg race, and his top finish was eighth in the Sonsio Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the IMS road course in May.

Hauger is nonetheless regarded as a driver of immense promise after dominating the INDY NXT by Firestone Series and capturing the 2025 championship. He won six races and the title in his rookie year before stepping up to IndyCar in 2026, where he claimed Rookie of the Year honors and earned the moniker “The Norwegian Nightmare.”

I interviewed Hauger in the pit lane following the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca—the Mission Foods Grand Prix of Monterey—to discuss what winning Rookie of the Year means to him.

“I’m incredibly grateful to earn this title,” Hauger said. “Since you can only be Rookie of the Year once, I’m thrilled and want to thank the team, Honda, and everyone who supported me. It’s been a roller‑coaster season, but finishing with that award makes it all worthwhile.”

“I’m also thrilled to have helped Dale Coyne Racing claim the final Leader’s Circle spot. Getting both cars into the program this year is a significant step for the team and its future prospects.”

“It’s been a big day, and we were fortunate to pull it off. The first year flew by, but I’ve gathered experience at every turn and savored every moment. It’s been a swift yet eventful season.”

Dennis Hauger’s Journey to American Racing

Before his move to the United States, Hauger progressed through the European open‑wheel ladder, capturing the Italian Formula 4 title in 2019 and the FIA Formula 3 championship in 2021. He then advanced to Formula 2, where he won five races, and spent several years as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team.

Larry Foyt, team president, noted that Hauger’s blend of experience, youth, and adaptability made him an appealing signing as the organization looks ahead to 2027 and beyond.

“Dennis has achieved a great deal for a 23‑year‑old,” Foyt remarked. “Whenever he steps into a new challenge, he adapts swiftly and wins. His rookie INDY NXT victory caught everyone’s eye, and we have monitored his development throughout his first IndyCar season.”

Hauger’s next move is to join AJ Foyt Racing and take the wheel of the No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet for the 2027 season.

“I’m genuinely excited about this opportunity,” Hauger said. “Larry and I have had productive discussions about the team’s direction. While I’ve gained considerable knowledge in my first two years of American racing, I know there’s still much to learn and achieve in IndyCar.”

“The team’s rich history is impressive, but what truly excites me is the vision they’re pursuing for the future. I’m eager to work hard with everyone and see how far we can push the program.”

Dennis Hauger’s Importance to AJ Foyt Racing’s Future Plans

Bringing Hauger on board is a key element of Foyt’s vision for the team’s future, a squad founded in 1965 by his father, the legendary A. J. Foyt—the all‑time IndyCar leader in wins (67) and championships (7), and the only driver to claim four Indianapolis 500 victories.

“We’ve devoted considerable discussion to the team’s direction,” Larry Foyt said. “We’re investing in our personnel, technical infrastructure, and commercial initiatives to keep moving forward, and Dennis plays a major role in that strategy.”

“We’re fortunate to partner with Hendricks Holding Company and Homes For Our Troops, who share our belief in the No. 14 program. Their support has given us the platform to keep building, and now it’s up to us to maximize that opportunity.”

Dennis Hauger’s Public Engagements with AJ Foyt Racing

In addition to his racing duties, Hauger will be introduced to another facet of the No. 14 program during his first public appearance with AJ Foyt Racing next month.

On October 2, Hauger will join the team at the GM Defense Valor & Velocity Gala at the GM Design Dome in Warren, Michigan, where the Homes For Our Troops Indy car will be on display. The evening supports the Medal of Honor Foundation and will bring together senior GM leadership, military leaders and members of the U.S. defense community.

Also attending will be Diane Hendricks and her daughter Konya Hendricks Schuh of Hendricks Holding Company, Inc., General (USA, Ret) Richard A. Cody, Chairman of the Board of Homes For Our Troops and President/CEO of Homes For Our Troops and Brigadier General, USA (Ret) Tom Landwermeyer.

Homes For Our Troops builds and donates specially adapted custom homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. The organization has been represented throughout the season on Foyt’s No. 14 Chevrolet.

“I’ve been learning more about Homes For Our Troops and what the No. 14 HFOT.org car represents,” Hauger said. “It’s obviously much bigger than racing, and I’m looking forward to meeting General Cody, Diane and Konya and learning more about it. To have my first event with the team connected to Homes For Our Troops and supporting the Medal of Honor Foundation makes it a pretty special way to get started.”

The gala will give Hauger an opportunity to meet many of the people behind the No. 14 program before the focus turns toward preparing for his first season with Foyt.

Dennis Hauger’s Signing Marks the First of Several Expected Announcements from AJ Foyt Racing

Hauger’s signing is the first of additional announcements expected from AJ Foyt Racing regarding its 2027 driver lineup in the coming weeks.

For Larry Foyt, the goal behind all of the changes remains pretty simple.

“Dennis wants to win, and we want to win,” Foyt said. “That’s where everything starts.”

As for Ferrucci, his future remains uncertain, but he could return to the team for the Indy 500 only in an extra car. If not with Foyt, Ferrucci’s Indy 500 record of nine-straight top 10 finishes would make him an attractive “Indy Only” driver.

But the future at AJ Foyt Racing appears to belong to Dennis Hauger.
