Up front: The flag and hat used to honor Kyle Busch by Denny Hamlin post-race at Michigan International Speedway will not enter public circulation.
Following his post-race remarks, Hamlin emphasized this as a ‘one-time gesture’ following Busch’s passing at age 41.
Hamlin matched Busch’s 63 Career Cup Series victories—achieving 62 the prior week—prompting immediate plans to commemorate the Heisman-winning driver.
Collaboration between Joe Gibbs Racing (No. 1 font) and Richard Childress Racing (No. 8 design) created a dual-nicknamed tribute.
“Monday morning, we realized we might need this dual look—especially after winning last week and facing the possibility of another win,” Hamlin stated.
Initially uncertain between Busch’s iconic #18 and his later #8, Hamlin opted for the combination after RCR approved using their stylized 8 with JGR’s No. 1 typography.
“The NASCAR community has faced challenges recently. This was my way of honoring someone I deeply respected and learned from as a teammate,” Hamlin added.
Legal restrictions prevent sales of the flag, hat, or any products featuring the combined designs. Coach Joe Gibbs also plans to celebrate with Hamlin at the shop, highlighting their 15-year NRCA record as teammates.
“We’ll discuss this further tomorrow. Busch’s legacy deserves continued respect,” Gibbs remarked.
