Deshaun Watson Faces Boos from Cleveland Fans During Struggled Return

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson said this week that he doesn’t care what kind of reaction he receives from Cleveland fans. The response he received during today’s preseason game was clearly negative.

The fans booed loudly as Watson entered the field and continued booing through the third quarter as his performance faltered. While Huntington Bank Field is largely empty, those present made clear their disapproval of Watson leading the team.

Watson struggled on the field as the crowd booed. The Browns’ offense failed to gain a first down on his opening two drives, and he threw an interception on his third drive, followed by a fourth‑down incompletion to end his fourth drive.

Acquiring Watson proved disastrous for the Browns, who surrendered three first‑round selections, a second‑round pick, a third‑round pick, and a fourth‑round pick, and then signed him to a five‑year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract. In the four seasons since, he has appeared in only 19 games and ranks among the league’s worst quarterbacks. The Browns proceeded with the trade even though they were aware of accusations that he sexually assaulted dozens of massage therapists, which led to an 11‑game suspension at the start of his Cleveland tenure.

Consequently, Watson can expect continued booing from Cleveland fans if he starts in Week Three, when the Browns host their first regular‑season game. His reaction — or lack thereof — is irrelevant.
