Lars Nootbaar launched the game’s opening pitch for a home run, and Corbin Carroll and Tim Tawa followed with long balls in a five‑run third inning, propelling the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10‑6 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
Nootbaar collected three hits for the Diamondbacks, who moved within a half‑game of the National League’s third and final wild‑card spot thanks to a San Diego Padres loss earlier in the evening.
Bryce Eldridge and Christian Koss each homered for the Giants—Koss’s first of the season—but the hosts were out‑hit 12‑5 and suffered their ninth loss in 11 meetings with Arizona this year.
The homers by Nootbaar (his fifth), Carroll (his 19th) and Tawa (his ninth) helped Arizona erase a Giants scoring advantage that spanned the first four innings.
Arizona held a 6‑5 lead entering the sixth, when a three‑run burst gave them control. Ildemaro Vargas delivered a two‑RBI single and Carroll added a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the night.
Relievers Gerardo Carrillo, Jonathan Loaisiga, Brandyn Garcia, Dennis Santana and Juan Morillo combined for five innings, allowing just one unearned run and a single hit.
Left‑handed starter Kohl Drake, promoted from the minors earlier in the day, was pulled after four innings, surrendering four hits and five runs while walking one and striking out four.
Carrillo (3‑1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless fifth to preserve a one‑run advantage.
Giants starter Blade Tidwell (0‑1) lasted five innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one.
Tawa’s three‑run shot came two pitches after Giants manager Tony Vitello was ejected for arguing that Nolan Arenado’s grounder over third base should have been ruled fair. Arenado’s double placed runners on second and third with the score 3‑2.
Vitello’s ejection was his second in three days. Giants ace Logan Webb, watching from the dugout, was also ejected.
Tawa, Arenado and James McCann each recorded two hits, as Arizona secured its third win in four games.
Eldridge’s home run was his 15th of the season; he finished with two hits, while Jung Hoo Lee scored twice for the Giants, who had begun the seven‑game homestand with three wins in four games.
