In the second T20I held at Ranchi’s JSCA International Stadium on October 9, 2026, India suffered a notable loss as West Indies chased down 249/5, securing victory with six wickets and nine balls to spare, thereby evening the five‑match series at 1‑1 with three fixtures left.
Former India wicketkeeper‑batter Dinesh Karthik shared his view on whether India should tweak its playing XI for the third T20I, also set for Ranchi on October 11, 2026. Speaking post‑match, he examined the squad’s makeup and the limited flexibility imposed by the current bowling arrangement.
“Will they look at an extra pacer if they feel it is required? So maybe Prince in for one of the spinners. At the same time, genuinely, if I were in the Indian dressing room, I would not change it up too much.” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
“I think they are playing a strong XI. Obviously, if you want to play Nitish Kumar Reddy, I don’t see how they can fit in anybody. Unless you are resting somebody and the communication is very clear, I don’t see why you should change based on this game,” he added.
Bowling combination and squad flexibility concerns
Karthik pointed out the structural constraints that hinder squad tweaks. India presently fields two front‑line pacers, three all‑rounders and a single front‑line spinner, a mix that curtails the ability to add extra players. While this combination has worked well in the past, the Ranchi defeat sparked debate over whether tactical adjustments are warranted.
The presence of players such as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prince Yadav offers Shreyas Iyer alternatives for the remaining games. Yet Karthik noted that inserting them into the XI without dropping someone else is no easy task. He expressed confidence that the team’s existing balance remains sound, suggesting that a major overhaul is not justified by one loss.
