Dinesh Karthik names Abhishek Sharma as world’s best T20 opener

Former India wicketkeeper‑batter Dinesh Karthik has endorsed left‑hander Abhishek Sharma as the standout opener in international cricket today. Karthik’s backing comes after Abhishek’s explosive performances in T20Is, where he has established himself as one of India’s most dangerous batsmen in the shortest format.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik praised Abhishek’s consistency and downplayed concerns over his occasional dismissal to off‑spin. He noted that Abhishek now delivers match‑winning knocks every two or three innings, rather than once every five or six. “If he gets out to off‑spinners after hitting 30 off 10 or 12 balls, that’s acceptable,” Karthik remarked. “Only if he is bowled in the first two balls without reading the turn would it be a genuine issue.”

He highlighted a key example: Abhishek’s 15 runs off four deliveries against Michael Bracewell in the bowler’s inaugural over. Karthik argued that such aggressive scoring makes off‑spin a minor concern. “He gets out to off‑spin sometimes, but that’s normal. He’s the best opener in the world right now,” he added.

Why Karthik’s choice makes sense

Abhishek’s statistics underscore his impact. He recently posted a 113‑run innings off just 35 deliveries, his fourth T20I century and the joint‑second fastest by an Indian. That knock also set a new record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a successful T20I chase.

India’s powerplay aggression reached a historic high of 118 runs, with Abhishek spearheading an opening partnership that laid the foundation for victory. His ability to accelerate early and dominate the opening bout has made him a key asset at the top of the order.
