Equities across the Asia-Pacific region are displaying a mixed performance as market participants turn their attention toward the upcoming US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report for August, scheduled for release on Friday.
As of press time, the Nikkei 225 edged slightly lower to around 64,250, while the Shanghai Composite rose 0.2% to approximately 3,450. The KOSPI advanced 0.3% to near 6,585, whereas the Hang Seng index slipped 0.3% to around 25,230.
Fed Focus Remains on Inflation as TD Securities Forecasts Modest NFP Rebound
According to TD Securities, August payrolls are projected to indicate a modest recovery, with estimates suggesting that “August NFP likely rebounded to 95k following a 23k decline in July.” The firm anticipates that labour market conditions will remain broadly stable, noting that “we expect the UE rate to hold at 4.1%, with balanced risks.” TD maintains that even a stronger-than-expected reading would not significantly shift the policy outlook, arguing that “a hawkish employment report will reaffirm the Fed’s attention on inflation, but it will be unlikely to push the Committee towards hikes.”
Meanwhile, New York Fed Bank President John Williams stated on Wednesday that there is evidence “inflation continues to ease as the impact of tariffs fades,” while cautioning that elevated energy prices have yet to permeate other services.
In advance of the US NFP release, the August ADP Employment Change data came in weaker than expected. The ADP reported that private employers added 38,000 jobs in August, missing the 47,000 estimate and falling below the prior release of 46,000.
On the geopolitical front, concerns regarding further military escalation between the US and Iran have subsided after President Donald Trump remarked that he does not expect the renewed fighting to last “too long,” according to Reuters.
This de-escalation has applied slight selling pressure to oil prices, with WTI struggling to push past the $90.00 threshold.
