Donald Trump has fulfilled the $5 million (£3.7 million) damages award to E. Jean Carroll following a civil verdict finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, her legal counsel confirmed.
“Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” stated Roberta Kaplan, counsel for Carroll, in a brief announcement on Tuesday.
While Trump had attempted to postpone the settlement in an effort to have the Supreme Court review the denial of his appeal, the presiding judge ordered the payment to proceed last week.
A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team declined to comment on the transaction.
Carroll, 82, is a former magazine columnist who alleged that Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department store dressing room during the mid-1990s. She further alleged that he defamed her in a 2022 post on Truth Social while denying the accusations.
A New York jury ruled in Carroll’s favor in 2023, awarding her damages despite Trump’s consistent denials of the allegations.
Following the initial verdict, the funds were placed in a court-controlled account while the legal appeals process was ongoing.
Last week, Trump’s legal team challenged the judge’s mandate to pay, characterizing the litigation as a “hoax” and a politically motivated “witch hunt” funded by the Democratic party.
