Drake Maye’s Costly Late Interception Leaves Cris Collinsworth Speechless on Air

Cris Collinsworth required nearly a minute to return to the broadcast booth.

Fifty-six seconds elapsed between Drake Maye’s game-losing interception against the Seahawks on Wednesday night and the NBC analyst’s first reaction to the pivotal moment.

“I can’t believe that throw… Wow,” Collinsworth remarked upon his return. “I mean, there are certain things you simply cannot do or attempt when you have field goal range and overtime in your grasp. That was the play—coming off his back foot and fading away without completing the pass. Out of bounds.”

“Ouch,” he concluded.

Facing a third-and-five situation with 26 seconds remaining and trailing 13-10, Maye launched a high-risk pass down the right sideline intended for Mack Hollins while under pressure. The ball resulted in a toe-tapping interception by the Seahawks’ Josh Jobe.

Officials ruled Jobe’s feet in bounds after reviewing the replay.

“A pick! A terrible decision!” play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico yelled.

“Josh Jobe. One. Two [in counting his feet on the replay]. Ball game,” he added.

The only instance of Maye recording multiple interceptions last season occurred during the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss to the Seahawks in February, where he threw two in the 29-13 defeat.

Starting his third NFL season on Wednesday, the 24-year-old quarterback threw three interceptions.

Tirico and Collinsworth both covered the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8, as NBC held the broadcasting rights to the marquee event. They watched the exact same outcomes unfold in a Super Bowl rematch.

New England led 10-0 in the second half and appeared to hold all the momentum. Even without injured Sam Darnold, Seattle scored 13 consecutive points, including a 45-yard touchdown from backup QB Drew Lock to wideout Jaxson Smith-Njigba.

The Seahawks intercepted Maye three times in the fourth quarter on consecutive possessions, which set up their scoring opportunities.

In Week 2, the Patriots will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 20, while the Seahawks will be on the road in Arizona.
