Dutch Uncles hail from Manchester, not the Netherlands, and whether any of them are actually uncles remains unconfirmed—though with six members in this art-pop outfit, the odds are decent. The group last surfaced in 2023 with True Entertainment, while bassist and lead composer Robin Richards released his solo debut, Taproots, last year. Now the Manchester sextet is preparing a new record.
Polygon Hotel arrives early next year. The band self-produced the album, with Felix Davis—a collaborator on Geese and Lime Hotel projects—handling mixing duties. It marks their first release as a six-piece, following the addition of multi-instrumentalist Henry Broadhead and guitarist Neil Wright as full-time members.
The lead single “No Note” evokes the spirited complexity of XTC or Tears for Fears, featuring a dense arrangement built around prominent marimba and unpredictable melodic turns. In a press statement, band member Duncan Wallis offered the following:
A three-minute lament on time wasted looking at one’s phone. Specifically, time spent on social media and a regret that so much of our lives has been invested into the engine of social media, just for it to be snatched up and controlled by the worst people imaginable.
And, somewhat ironically considering it’s a reflection on time wasted, it only took five minutes to write the lyrics.
Patrick King directed the video for “No Note,” which features nightmarish ’90s-style CGI animation by Miles Buckle. Watch it below, alongside the Polygon Hotel tracklist and the band’s upcoming tour dates.
