Multistate E. coli Outbreak Linked to Raw Milk Cheese Results in 13 Illnesses and Eight Hospitalizations

A recall has been issued for raw milk cheese after more than a dozen people were sickened with E. coli across several states.
The recalled products include Sierra Nevada Graziers grass‑fed raw milk cheeses: medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeño jacket, and Monterey jack sold at retail in 8‑oz or 16‑oz packages.
A total of 13 people have been sickened so far, including eight hospitalizations, with the most recent symptom onset recorded on Aug. 26.
THE FDA AND CDC ARE INVOLVED IN AN INVESTIGATION OF A MULTISTATE E. coli OUTBREAK LINKED TO SIERRANA NEVADA GRAZIERS GRASS‑FED RAW MILK CHEESE – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated it is continuing an investigation into the multistate E. coli O26:H11 infection linked to the cheese. When officials interviewed the sickened residents, each confirmed having consumed the raw milk cheese within the last week.
Sierra Nevada Cheese Company, LCC voluntarily issued the recall and is collaborating with federal regulators.
Affected populations span three initial states and then broader to six additional jurisdictions, with cases noted in California and Nevada; one person in Oregon, plus infections in Utah, Colorado, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.
“Do not eat, sell, or serve recalled Sierra Nevada Graziers grass‑fed raw milk cheeses,” the FDA announced.

The agency added that although this specific product carries a long shelf life, consumers must check refrigerators and freezers for the recalled raw milk cheeses and dispose of them safely. If cheese was frozen or refrigerated without original packaging or if identification is unclear, it should be discarded.

FDA investigators remain searching for the contamination source and evaluating whether other products are implicated.
Individuals who possess the cheese should discard it and thoroughly sanitize any surface or container that accommodated the product during preparation.

Medical professionals warn that E. coli symptoms may emerge up to nine days post-consumption, presenting with severe abdominal cramping, acute diarrhea, fever, and nausea. In rare instances, the infection escalates to life‑threatening complications such as chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, and hypertension.
