During the Ashes, Sophie Ecclestone drew attention for declining an interview with former teammate and current Channel 7 broadcaster Alex Hartley.
Hartley, a 2017 World Cup winner with England, had previously scrutinized the squad’s fitness levels following their premature exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
While fitness became a point of public contention, the appointment of coach Edwards brought a new mandate; she emphasized that fitness standards are now “non-negotiable” and that players will be held strictly accountable.
“Those conversations are quite annoying because people outside the group don’t see what happens in training or how hard the girls work,” Ecclestone remarked.
“I feel people are very quick to judge. I don’t believe we were unfit, and I think those claims were unfair.”
“However, we recognized that we could make improvements in that area, and we have. As a group, we are now incredibly fit. If anyone wishes to judge us, I would welcome them into our environment for a day to see the intensity of our work.”
Following the defeat in Australia, the team faced allegations of complacency. Despite her consistent individual success, Ecclestone also became a target of criticism. She notes, however, that she is now better prepared to navigate the emotional volatility of international sports.
Ecclestone intends to remain active on social media throughout England’s World Cup campaign, which opens against Sri Lanka. The team aims to mirror the home-turf successes of the Lionesses in football and the Red Roses in rugby.
England’s last World Cup victory occurred at home in 2017. Since then, they have struggled in global tournaments, most recently suffering a defeat to South Africa in last year’s 50-over semi-final.
While remaining focused on the immediate tasks ahead, Ecclestone spoke candidly about the emotional significance of winning the trophy after a challenging period.
“The group of girls around me are so supportive; I wouldn’t be here without them,” she said.
“I am open with them about my feelings. To lift a trophy and share that moment with them is something I’ve only dreamed of. It would be a miracle ending.”
