Once covering a vast area across western Utah and parts of Nevada and Idaho, Lake Bonneville was a massive Ice Age lake, nearly as large as Lake Michigan. Its retreat left behind flat, mineral-rich playas and salt flats, which later became a backdrop for significant engineering achievements and stories of human exploration and survival.
Formed around 55,000 years ago during a wet period, Lake Bonneville expanded as volcanic activity in southeastern Idaho redirected the Bear River, filling basins with water. For millennia, a natural dam at Red Rock Pass maintained its size until a catastrophic breach 18,000 years ago. This event triggered a massive flood, lowering the lake level by over 350 feet (105 meters) in six weeks, marking one of North America’s largest known floods.
The lake’s disappearance left a geological legacy visible in satellite images. NASA’s Landsat 8 OLI captured features like bathtub rings and wave-cut terraces along former shorelines. The dried lakebed, composed of clay, marl, and sand, appears paler than surrounding rockier terrain. In deeper basins, evaporite minerals like halite and gypsum form bright salt flats, attracting mineral extraction activities.
Contrasting the flat playas are rugged mountain ranges like the Silver Island and Newfoundland Mountains, composed of ancient sedimentary and igneous rocks. Crater Island, for instance, features silica-rich sandstones and quartz monzonite, formed in shallow seas and later uplifted by tectonic forces. These geological layers inform modern scientific missions, such as NASA’s DAVINCI probe, which tested instruments at Crater Island in 2026 to study Venus’s atmosphere and terrain.
Crater Island’s rugged landscape provided a test site for DAVINCI’s cameras and instruments. Helicopter-mounted systems captured high-resolution images of rock formations, enabling 3D geological mapping. This exercise aims to replicate similar surveys on Venus’s Alpha Regio, atarget for future exploration.
Beyond science, Lake Bonneville’s playas have hosted human feats. In 1960, Mickey Thompson set a land speed record of 406.6 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 2026, Andy Green broke the sound barrier in a hydrogen-fueled vehicle, achieving 406.32 mph with zero carbon emissions. These events highlight the area’s dual role as a site for innovation and adventure.
Historical journeys also traversed the region. In 1846, the Donner-Reed Party encountered challenges near Crater Island. Their wagons sank into mud after breaching the salt crust, forcing them to abandon equipment in the desert—a stark reminder of the landscape’s unforgiving nature.
