The Oilers Considering PTO Options

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman recently joined Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now to discuss several key topics, including injury updates, salary cap management, and the potential use of Professional Tryouts (PTOs). As the offseason progresses, unsigned veterans often seek opportunities, and with some roster flexibility, the Oilers might be open to bringing in talent on a tryout basis.

Bowman acknowledged that while a PTO is not a primary focus, it remains a viable option given the team’s current roster dynamics.

When asked about specific names, Bowman noted that there are still quality players seeking contracts, though he did not specify who Edmonton might be targeting. High-profile free agents like Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrik Laine, Evander Kane, Michael Bunting, and John Klingberg remain unsigned. Bowman commented, “We’re not overflowing with players, but we also don’t have a shortage of players. We’re in that mode where, yeah, we probably could try to bring a guy in on a tryout—it wouldn’t be the worst idea.”

Montreal’s Interest in Kirill Marchenko

While the Edmonton Oilers have also been linked to Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko, the Montreal Canadiens are emerging as strong contenders for his acquisition. Industry insiders suggest that Montreal’s chances of landing Marchenko are higher than those of other teams, as they appear poised to make a significant push for the star winger.

According to analysts on The Sick Podcast, the Canadiens are positioning themselves to target players who may eventually seek an exit from Columbus. Alongside teams like Tampa Bay, Florida, and Buffalo, Montreal is viewed as a prime destination looking to upgrade its roster. Observers believe that both Marchenko and eventually defenseman Zach Werenski could look to “get themselves out of there” in the future, making them prime trade targets for contending teams.

Bolduc and Xhekaj Contract Negotiations

As the Montreal Canadiens approach training camp, two key contract situations require close monitoring: forward Zachary Bolduc and defenseman Arber Xhekaj. According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, Bolduc is reportedly relaxed about his contract situation and could finalize a three-year deal valued at approximately $4 million per season. Having shown strong progress during Montreal’s recent playoff run, Bolduc is poised for an expanded role in the upcoming season.

In contrast, Xhekaj’s contract situation is more complex. Although the Canadiens regard him as an integral part of the team, his limited ice time and inconsistent deployment last season may make him hesitant to commit to a long-term deal. Engels highlighted the risks of a prolonged holdout, stating, “I can’t help but wonder just how long Xhekaj is willing to wait. Because waiting too long could cost him valuable preparation time for the season, and that cost could outweigh the benefit of holding out, especially since the type of deal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is trying to swing rarely materializes in the pre-season.”
