An Egyptian court has sentenced television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 others to death for manufacturing and trafficking narcotics in what authorities described as a large-scale drug case, according to official media reports on Saturday.
Khalifa, 39, is best known for hosting Mission Impossible, a program focused on security and crime issues.
State-linked Al-Ahram newspaper reported that a Cairo court handed down the death sentence by hanging, citing charges of forming an organized criminal gang that procured materials for narcotics manufacturing, trafficking, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The ruling came after the court consulted Egypt’s Grand Mufti for his religious opinion, a mandatory legal procedure in capital cases.
The verdict remains subject to appeal.
In addition to her television career, Khalifa owns a plastic surgery clinic and a production company specializing in organizing events.
