Palestinian spectators in Gaza shared in Egypt’s early triumph but turned to mourning as the match concluded. Bassam Nabhan, a legal professional present at a deir al-balah cafe, explained, ‘Egypt and Palestine are interconnected; our joy was short-lived as we returned home with heavy hearts.’
Online discourse has highlighted persistent beliefs that Argentina receives disproportionate treatment from FIFA officials, with comedian Bassem Youssef now endorsing conspiracy theories he previously dismissed.
While the defeat overshadowed Egypt’s historic achievement of defeating Australia in a knockout round – the first African team to do so – international figures like Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum praised Egypt’s spirit. Social media reactions have blended grief with renewed pride in the team’s performance.
