Electric Motorcycles Revolutionize Wildlife Conservation in Africa’s Maasai Mara
MAASAI MARA, Kenya — Joshua Kijape glides his motorcycle through towering grasses, ears tuned to movement hidden in the bush. The machine produces no engine roar, no exhaust, and leaves little warning for those upon whose paths it travels.
Attached to Entumoto Safari Camp within Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve, the Mara‑Siana ranger seeks precisely this quiet patrol experience.
For the past year, Kijape has patrolled the reserve on an electric motorcycle, using its near‑silent motor to approach wildlife and, when required, track poachers.
“With this bike, I can get closer to the animals without disturbing them,” he explained.
“And when you are following poachers, they cannot hear you coming.”
The electric motorcycle forms part of a growing effort to bring Africa’s energy transition into wildlife reserves, swapping petrol‑powered transport for electrified vehicles charged by the sun. In the Mara, conservation operators are testing whether electric mobility can cut fuel use and upkeep costs while containing noise in one of Africa’s most significant ecosystems.”
The initiative coincides with one of the Mara’s peak seasons, as the annual wildebeest migration floods the grasslands with animals, tourists, and conservation crews.
Jason Knauf, chief executive of the BBC programme The Earthshot Prize, observed that such deployments illustrate how the energy transition is extending well beyond conventional urban contexts.
“Seeing electric vehicles traverse the Maasai Mara amid the Great Migration provides powerful proof that the transition reaches far beyond cities,” Knauf noted. “The Mara stands as one of the world’s harshest environments; if clean technology can be shown to be reliable, affordable and effective there, it bolsters the case for scaling it across other conservation lands and isolated communities,” he added.
For ROAM, the Nairobi‑based company behind Kijape’s bicycle, the Mara serves as an engineering test proving that an e‑bike manufactured in Kenya can endure rough tracks, lengthy patrols and remote settings.”
“Protecting nature is worth far more than money, so we believe putting our motorcycles and products out there is essential,” said ROAM CEO Filip Lovstrom.
“Eliminating the noise associated with petrol‑powered bikes creates a tranquil environment beneficial to both fauna and travelers.”
Lovstrom emphasized that economic viability could drive wider adoption.
“Instead of shipping petrol to the field and then burning it in countless motorcycles, you can install solar chargers on location, adding value while supporting the environment,” he said.
ROAM’s e‑bike covers roughly 160 kilometres (100 mi) per charge, but longer surveys will require charging points along the route. Because the bikes connect to standard 10‑amp sockets, Lovstrom confirmed, installing stations becomes feasible with modestly sized solar and battery arrays.
“Just as you need access to petrol—hardly possible in places like the Maasai Mara—you now need access to electricity,” he stated.
The market extends beyond conservation. Nearby communities that lack road options often rely on motorcycles for daily transport.
Emboo River Camp in the Mara has operated electric safari vehicles since 2019, fully charged from solar power.
“It constitutes an excellent use case for electric vehicles,” said Loic Amado, the camp’s co‑founder and co‑director.
“They are silent, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and above all economical.”
What started as an experiment has matured, under Amado’s other venture EERA LAB, into a broader sustainability enterprise. Today it supports twenty‑five lodges across East Africa with solar installations, waste‑water treatment and electric‑vehicle conversions.”
“Emboo served as a proof‑of‑concept and a testing ground,” Amado remarked.
“We aimed to validate the model in situ.”
Since then, Emboo has expanded its EV fleet and more than tripled its solar capacity to match rising demand.
Kenya hosts only a small number of electric safari vehicles currently in use, largely confined to the Mara and a few other conservation zones, and the concept is drawing interest from larger safari operators.
Asilia, which operates about twenty lodges throughout East Africa, has similarly introduced its own electric fleet.
EERA LAB has implemented a dashboard that monitors energy production and consumption, water levels, recycling rates and the solar power allocation for each vehicle.
“It removes the uncertainty that safari operators have faced over recent years,” Amado said.
Conversion costs run between $35,000 and $45,000, according to Amado, yet the investment typically pays for itself in roughly two and a half to three years thanks to reductions in fuel and maintenance expenses.
“It relies entirely on sunlight, and Kenya enjoys abundant rays,” he concluded.
For Amado, the ambition exceeds simply swapping individual petrol vehicles.
“Our ultimate objective is to achieve carbon neutrality in the Maasai Mara by 2035,” he declared.
