Lamine Yamal has rapidly rewritten the benchmarks for teenage footballers. At 19, the Barcelona winger is positioning himself among the leading Ballon d’Or contenders, and he offered a striking comparison with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo: “Never this early had so much been won.”
Since making his first-team debut for Barcelona at age 15 in 2023, Yamal has become an indispensable starter for the Blaugrana and one of the world’s most promising talents. Beyond individual La Liga milestones previously set by Messi and Ronaldo, his pivotal role in Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph secured his place in international football history at an unprecedented age.
In an interview with Argentine legend Jorge Valdano on Movistar+, Yamal placed his early collection of honours in historical context: “There have been great stars in football, like Leo (Messi), like Cristiano (Ronaldo), or like Diego (Maradona)—whom I wasn’t able to see—but never this early had so much been won. There’s the case of Pele, who indeed won many things early on, but not in recent times.”
By winning the 2026 World Cup, Yamal joined an elite group of just ten players, including teammate Pau Cubarsi, to lift the trophy before turning 20. He achieved the milestone at 19 years and six days, surpassing Kylian Mbappe’s 2018 age benchmark of 19 years and 207 days while remaining behind the records held by Pele (17 years and 249 days in 1958) and Ronaldo Nazario (17 years and 298 days in 1994).
Yamal subsequently stressed that his rapid rise has not diminished his long-term ambitions. “And there are people who think that because I’ve won, at some point I’ll relax, but I know I have a thousand things to do to go down in football history,” he added.

A comparison of the three players’ early career paths reveals clear similarities between Yamal and Messi, both products of La Masia who became established at Barcelona, while Ronaldo developed at Sporting CP before moving to Manchester United. Including domestic and international honours, each player had a distinct collection of trophies at age 19.
At 19, Cristiano Ronaldo was settling into his first season at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. Developing as a classic wide midfielder, the Portuguese winger had two official team honours: the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira with Sporting CP and the 2003-04 FA Cup, in which he scored against Millwall in the final.
Messi was firmly established in Barcelona’s starting lineup alongside the team’s focal point, Ronaldinho. The Argentine playmaker had already won five major honours with the Blaugrana: two La Liga titles (2004-05 and 2005-06), the 2005-06 UEFA Champions League, and two Spanish Super Cups (2005 and 2006). He also added a 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup title with Argentina, earning the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe.
At 19, Yamal has the largest collection of the three, with eight major trophies. Although he has not yet won a Champions League title, he has captured three La Liga championships, two Spanish Super Cups, and a Copa del Rey with Barcelona, as well as the European Championship and World Cup with Spain.
