A school visit preceded the gathering in Dolgellau’s Eldon Square, where despite persistent rain, crowds had assembled to celebrate rally champion Elfyn Evans.
While the majority of attendees were local, others had traveled significant distances to be present at the event.
From the podium, Elfyn Evans thanked his family for their support throughout his career, noting that his grandfather “taught me to drive probably far too early”.
Wyn Williams of Llanrwst and Neil Pringle of Betws-y-Coed had been in Sardinia when Evans secured the championship.
Williams described the celebration as “the icing on the cake after being in Sardinia”.
Pringle added that the evening was “fantastic” and that the first minister’s presence “shows what this means to Wales”.
“This is for Elfyn, his family and the country,” Evans stated.
Heledd Edwards, who traveled from Talerddig to Dolgellau, described Evans’ perseverance as an inspiration.
Several of Evans’ family members were in the crowd, including his aunt Lowri Edwards, who journeyed from Glan Conwy and said she was immensely proud to have a world champion in the family.
“We’re absolutely thrilled, to be honest. He’s come so close and been terribly unlucky, finishing second five times — we’re absolutely thrilled,” she said.
Dolgellau Town Council helped organize the celebration, with Deputy Mayor Nia Wyn Evans stating: “We are absolutely thrilled and delighted to be able to welcome Elfyn back as a world champion; there’s a real buzz in the town.”
