An unusual situation emerged as Smriti Mandhana and Charlie Dean appeared for the toss of the first T20I in the series between England Women and India Women at Chelmsford on Thursday, May 28. Fans of both teams were puzzled as to why the respective captains, Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt, did not participate in this match.
England won the toss and elected to field first. Subsequently, it was officially confirmed that Tilly Corteen-Coleman would make her England debut, and the Indian side also introduced Yastika Bhatia, replacing the experienced Harmanpreet Kaur.
Why are Harmanpreet and Nat Sciver-Brunt not playing the first T20I?
Smriti, Harmanpreet’s deputy and the stand‑in captain for this match, explained that the mainstay skipper missed the game because she was unfit. Charlie, England’s captain, added that the regular skipper is recovering from a calf injury, which has sidelined her for the series.
The match began poorly for India, as Smriti was dismissed for a duck. Shortly after, her opening partner Shafali Verma also fell five balls later. Lauren Bell claimed both wickets, leaving the visitors under severe pressure. Although India urgently needed Harmanpreet’s services, Yastika stepped in as a reliable replacement, scoring an unbeaten half‑century.
Yastika, a left‑handed wicketkeeper‑batter, effortlessly handled the English attack, accelerating the scoring. She built a century partnership with the experienced Jemimah Rodrigues, enabling the Women in Blue to mount a strong comeback. At the time of writing, India stood at 111 for two wickets after 11 overs, with both Jemimah and Yastika surpassing their fifties.
