England captain Harry Kane has emphasized the squad’s unity ahead of their World Cup semi-final against Argentina, dismissing rumors of internal discord following teammate Jude Bellingham’sCritique of manager Thomas Tuchel’s assessment of their performance versus Norway.
The team secured their semi-final berth with a narrow 2-1 victory over Norway in Miami’s intense conditions on Saturday, now preparing for Wednesday’s clash in Atlanta (20:00 BST) against three-time world champions Argentina, who defeated Switzerland 3-1.
Tuchel faced criticism after stating post-Norway that England “got lucky” and expressing dissatisfaction with their performance “in every sense.”
Bellingham responded succinctly: “Yeah, well, whatever. It’s difficult out there – it’s a tough shift.”
In comments to BBC Sport on Monday, Kane rejected suggestions of division within the camp.
“When you’re in the middle of a high-pressure game and questioned just minutes after the final whistle, without fully understanding the context, it’s natural for Jude to react candidly,” Kane explained.
“Creating artificial divisions is easy—seems almost an English tradition at major tournaments. But here’s the truth: our unity stems from genuine togetherness—players, coaching staff, everyone. Some narratives get amplified beyond their actual significance.”
While acknowledging differences in leadership style compared to former manager Sir Gareth Southgate, Kane praised Tuchel’s authenticity.
“Thomas leads with passion and authenticity—his words aren’t pre-packaged. That honesty resonates. He’s among the world’s elite coaches for good reason, and we’ve embraced his vision through our shared commitment.”
