How To Play Pips

Pips is a puzzle game that uses a grid of multicolor tiles. Each colored region imposes a specific condition that must be satisfied. Players are given a set of dominoes to place on the grid; all dominoes must be used, and each condition must be met correctly in order to complete the level. The puzzles are available in Easy, Medium, and Difficult tiers.

Here’s an example of a difficult tier Pips:

The example grid shows a variety of symbols and numbers, each tied to its color. The three purple squares on the left must not all be equal (the crossed‑out equals sign indicates this). The two pink squares next to them must sum to zero. The zigzag blue squares must all be equal. Dominoes can be rotated as needed to fit into the correct positions.

Additional rules not illustrated here include ‘less than’ (<) and 'greater than' (>) conditions. If a > or < sign appears on multiple tiles, the total of those tiles must be greater than (or less than) the specified number. Blank tiles can contain any value. The complete list of possible conditions is:

  • = All pips must equal one another in this group.
  • ≠ All pips must not equal one another in this group.
  • > The pip in this tile (or tiles) must be greater than the listed number.
  • < The pip in this tile must be less than the listed number.
  • An exact number (like 6) The pip must equal this exact number.
  • Tiles with no conditions can be anything.

To finish a puzzle, all dominoes must be placed so that every square is filled and each condition is satisfied. Some puzzles have a single solution, while others may allow two or more valid arrangements. You can try today’s Pips puzzle now.

Hard Pips Walkthrough And Solution

Here’s today’s Hard Pips:

Today’s Hard puzzle is themed around the letters ‘F’ and ‘A’, suggesting either ‘Far Away’ or ‘Filthy Animal’. The layout offers few obvious starting points, many duplicate numbers, and limited clear placements, so it required some trial and error to solve.

Step 1

Begin by placing the 6/6 domino in the lower blue equal tiles, then insert the 6/2 domino from the blue equal region into the pink 8 cells. Next, position the 6/5 domino bridging the pink 8 cells down into the dark blue greater‑than‑3 cells, and complete the top pink equal tiles with the 4/4 domino.

Step 2

Next, insert the 4/5 domino from the pink equal cells down into the dark blue greater‑than‑2 cells and place the 3/3 domino in the orange equal cells. Move to the ‘F’ section and put the 0/6 domino in the rightmost purple 9 tiles.

Solution

The solution proceeds with the 3/2 domino extending from the purple 9 tiles down into the orange less‑than‑3 cells, followed by the 6/1 domino positioned from the purple greater‑than‑3 cells into the green 8 cells. Conclude the puzzle with the 3/4 domino filling the remaining purple 8 tiles.

Have a great Tuesday, Pipsqueaks!
