Scorecard

England find themselves in a precarious position after a chaotic second day at The Oval.

Despite a promising start on day one without captain Ben Stokes, England surrendered momentum due to questionable tactics, a dropped catch, and a stellar maiden Test century from Glenn Phillips.

New Zealand lifted their total from 291‑7 overnight to 391 all out.

Emilio Gay contributed a half‑century and stand‑in captain Joe Root added 46, but England slumped three wickets for 35 runs, slipping to 177‑5.

A missed catch by James Rew off Will O’Rourke left England at 222‑6, still 169 runs behind with the tail exposed. Jordan Cox remains unbeaten on 22, while Jofra Archer has yet to score.

England set the tone for their own difficulties from the first ball of the day, offering a short‑ball trap to Kyle Jamieson that resulted in a four‑bye bouncer.

Jamieson recovered with a vital 41 after a dropped catch by Ben Duckett at 15. Archer did not bowl for the first 90 minutes, including with the second new ball, but broke his silence with his fourth delivery.

The home side added to its woes when Duckett was run out for 36 after a misjudged short single called by Gay.

Gay and Root forged a partnership of 74 runs, only for both Root and Harry Brook to fall lbw to Matt Henry in quick succession, delivering a severe double blow to England.
