England Goalkeeper Crisis: Pickford and Trafford Compete for Starting Spot

For the first time in over a decade, Jordan Pickford faces a genuine challenger for England’s starting goalkeeper spot.

The Everton shot-stopper has served as the Three Lions’ undisputed No. 1 since his 2017 debut, but that dominance is now being contested.

James Trafford made his competitive debut for England in Saturday’s 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain, as manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the goalkeeping battle is officially open.

Pickford recently overtook Peter Shilton as England’s most-capped World Cup goalkeeper during their quarter-final win over Norway.

Under Gareth Southgate, Pickford had no natural rival, and the trend continued under Tuchel initially, with Pickford starting nearly every World Cup qualifier and all matches this summer.

However, James Trafford has emerged as a legitimate rival, with Tuchel stating that both goalkeepers will receive “two consecutive matches each” during this international break.

Trafford has impressed since his £45m transfer to Leeds United.

Against Spain, the 23-year-old showcased his footwork and made a stunning save to deny Ferran Torres in the first half.

Despite his efforts, he conceded three times as England fell to the world champions in their Nations League opener.

“I believe he deserved the two appearances, which is why we gave them to him,” Tuchel stated.

“He began the Premier League season strongly and has been playing as Leeds’ first-choice keeper.

“Jordan [Pickford] did nothing wrong, but we wanted to use this tournament to assess how far James has actually come.”
