Holdstock reversed the initial out decision after approximately two minutes of review, with ‘not out’ displayed on The Oval’s big screen, yet continued deliberating at the drinks break. Approximately 90 seconds later, he restored Perera’s dismissal, leaving the stunned batsman, out for 18, visibly perplexed.
The ruling, reached after roughly four minutes, invoked cricket’s MCC Laws. Although Cox’s gloves had dislodged the bail, Archer’s throw toppled the stumps, qualifying under Law 29.2.1.6 as a valid wicket-breaking method.
As former England batter Mark Butcher noted on Sky Sports: “I’ve never encountered or heard this Law before – typically, wickets are broken when the ball dislodges the bails. The requirement to physically remove the stumps from the ground with the ball in hand has always been explicit.” Butcher emphasized the rarity of such a scenario in his decades-long career spanning playing and commentary.
MCC, which governs cricket’s rulebook, anticipates issuing further clarification on the decision in the days ahead.
