Ground stops were ordered Monday at six northeastern US airports following an equipment outage, disrupting thousands of travelers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed ground stops at Newark Liberty, Philadelphia International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Teterboro, and Westchester County airports.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated major problems at Newark and Philadelphia, with average delays of roughly 170 minutes and 60 minutes, respectively. As of around 1 p.m. local time, Newark reported 92 cancellations and nearly 70 diversions.
“Due to an FAA equipment outage, arrivals and departures are currently delayed,” Newark Liberty said on social media, advising passengers to check with their airlines for flight status.
The FAA attributed the outage to an issue with certain frequencies at the Philadelphia Terminal Radio Approach Control (TRACON), one of the airport’s air traffic control facilities.
UK Also Hit With Disruption
UK passengers faced delays and cancellations Monday after air traffic control systems experienced a technical issue—the second such problem this month.
Air traffic control operator NATS said it identified a connectivity issue with part of its systems network at its Prestwick centre in Scotland on Monday morning, clarifying that it was unrelated to the earlier disruption.
NATS later confirmed the issue had been resolved and said it was working with airlines and airports to lift air traffic restrictions.
“We apologise to passengers for the disruption and thank them for their patience,” NATS added.
