A groundbreaking package of air passenger rights reforms is on track for formal adoption by the European Union’s Council of Ministers on Monday, following endorsement by the European Parliament. The measures establish unprecedented protections for travelers across the 27-member bloc, covering both departures and arrivals on EU-operated flights.
Key Provisions of the New Directive
Children under 14 will automatically receive free seat reservations to sit beside parents, while pregnant travelers and passengers with reduced mobility will gain similar fee waivers for companion seating. Airlines must eliminate charges for correcting name spelling errors on tickets and provide complimentary printed boarding passes for checked-in passengers.
Enhanced Transparency Requirements
Carriers and booking platforms must prominently display total fares inclusive of standard cabin baggage allowances to simplify price comparisons. Passengers involuntarily downgraded to lower cabin classes will receive automatic reimbursements for the difference in fare.
Improved Compensation Framework
The revised rules maintain existing compensation thresholds for flight disruptions but introduce critical procedural enhancements. Affected travelers will receive written notifications of their rights within 96 hours post-journey, with a nine-month window to submit claims. Airlines must resolve compensation requests or provide formal denials within 30 days.
Passenger Entitlements During Disruptions
Delayed or canceled flights triggering significant schedule changes will require airlines to offer:
- Refreshments starting after two-hour delays
- Meals after three-hour delays
- Subsequent meals every five hours (capped at three daily)
- Complimentary hotel accommodation with transport for overnight diversions
Implementation Timeline
The directive will enter force in mid-2027, allowing EU member states time to adapt regulatory frameworks.
