The European Union on Tuesday denounced what it described as a “blatant act of aggression” by Iranian security forces against two French diplomats in Tehran earlier this month.

“The EU unequivocally condemns the aggression against two diplomats of the Embassy of France in Tehran perpetrated by Iranian security forces on 19 July,” said Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, in an official statement.
“Such acts constitute a blatant violation of the Vienna Conventions and jeopardize the very conduct of diplomatic relations.”
France reported that the two diplomats were subjected to an “extremely serious act of intimidation” by Iranian security services, with one individual reportedly suffering physical abuse.
According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, both diplomats were detained for several hours without justification, interrogated, and one was physically assaulted before they were permitted to return to the embassy.
Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Monday that it had summoned the French ambassador to protest the behavior of the diplomats.
A ministry spokesperson accused the diplomats of “interfering in Iran’s internal affairs under the pretext of engaging with civil society.”
