July 2 (Reuters) — The European Union has pledged €18 million in additional economic aid for Armenia and relaxed export regulations to strengthen trade ties, signaling solidarity as Moscow escalates economic pressure on the South Caucasus nation ahead of its parliamentary elections.
Moscow imposed broad trade restrictions on Armenia prior to its June parliamentary vote, which saw Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party secure 49.8% of the vote.
Russia accused Western nations of meddling in Armenia’s elections and aligned with opposition groups in condemning allegations of electoral irregularities.
The restrictions, targeting critical Armenian exports such as fresh produce, flowers, fish, and alcoholic products, have intensified as Yerevan shifts toward Western alliances and pursues EU membership ambitions.
Armenia remains part of the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union, with Moscow accounting for 35% of its foreign trade last year compared to 11% from the EU, per government data.
During a visit to Yerevan Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured Pashinyan of Brussels’ commitment to increased support and streamlined access to EU markets.
“I am aware of the significant economic challenges Armenia faces due to Russian pressure,” von der Leyen stated. “However, when our partners endure hardship, the EU stands together… You can rely on our steadfast partnership.”
The EU has removed tariffs for 80% of Armenian exports entering the bloc, facilitating trade with its 450 million consumers. The €18 million aid tranche forms part of a broader €52 million assistance package launched in June.
In a parallel initiative, von der Leyen announced €200 million in grants during a Wednesday visit to Baku to enhance regional infrastructure, energy, and digital connectivity, aiming to foster reconciliation between Azerbaijan and Armenia after decades of conflict.
