On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged Europeans to take decisive, large‑scale action to secure a competitive position vis‑à‑vis the United States and China in space—spanning communications and crewed missions. In an interview with FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney, Svetla Ben‑Itzhak, assistant professor of space and international relations and deputy director of the West Space Scholars Programme at Johns Hopkins University, noted that while Europe boasts top‑tier scientific and industrial expertise and ambition, it still trails the U.S. and China in investment, launch frequency, overall scale, and political cohesion.
