Artificial intelligence has rapidly become a ubiquitous tool used by hundreds of millions globally, yet technology leaders are increasingly raising concerns about its rapid advancement, which many view as a potential threat to humanity.
Modern AI systems now possess the capability to generate text and images, write computer code, and perform complex analyses—tasks that previously demanded substantial time and human intervention.
Advocates contend these tools could enhance productivity and generate novel types of employment.
However, their rapid development has simultaneously raised significant concerns regarding job displacement, the proliferation of misinformation, and the substantial resources required to sustain AI infrastructure. Researchers have further cautioned that regulatory frameworks and safety measures are struggling to keep pace with technological advancement.
“We must decelerate the pace at which we enhance AI model capabilities,” stated Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, creator of the AI tool Claude, on Saturday. “Progress will still appear rapid, and we must judiciously utilize the time we gain.”
Thus, what are the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence, and where is this rapidly evolving technology heading?
Enhances productivity and streamlines tasks
A primary benefit of AI lies in its capacity to accelerate task completion across various domains.
AI tools are currently deployed in education, writing and editing, information gathering, and computer programming.
According to the 2026 International AI Safety Report published by the UK government, nearly one billion people utilize AI for diverse applications.
The report revealed that the most frequent queries on OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform involved practical guidance on text editing or generation, medical health research, and information retrieval.
Evidence also indicates substantial productivity improvements in specific tasks. In September 2025, the Bank for International Settlements determined that generative AI delivered “productivity gains of between 10 and 65 percent, and efficiency gains of roughly 20 to 50 percent in time savings”.
The report noted these gains were particularly pronounced in “coding, consulting tasks and professional writing”.
Indian technology firm Wipro reported that its AI implementation freed capacity equivalent to 20,000 employees, who were subsequently reassigned to alternative roles.
Fosters new opportunities and skill development
While AI will inevitably eliminate or transform certain positions, it is simultaneously creating new employment avenues.
Demand is escalating for expertise in machine-learning programming and chatbot development. Software developers increasingly leverage AI to generate code before conducting verification and debugging.
These shifts indicate that workers may need to acquire AI proficiency alongside traditional professional competencies.
Wipro Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun stated that the company is training over 100,000 employees in advanced AI skills as it transitions toward what it terms a “human-AI operating model”.
Poses employment risks
Experts identify AI’s transformative automation capabilities as one of society’s most significant risks.
Although definitive data remains elusive, the 2026 International AI Safety Report warns that approximately 60 percent of jobs in advanced economies and 40 percent in emerging economies could be susceptible to AI, contingent upon adoption patterns by employers and workers.
Earlier this year, numerous technology giants announced workforce reductions amid increasing AI integration and shifting operational models.
Amazon eliminated 16,000 positions in its second round of layoffs within three months, while Pinterest announced cuts of 780 jobs as the company reallocated resources toward expanded AI investment.
Concerns also extend to career newcomers.
Stephen Clare, lead author of the 2026 International AI Safety Report, noted “suggestive evidence” that early-career professionals in AI-exposed occupations are encountering greater difficulty securing employment.
Vulnerable to misuse and harmful content dissemination
Generative AI—which creates content from existing data—can produce convincing text, voices, images, and videos, capabilities that may be exploited for malicious purposes.
AI-generated deepfakes have been employed to defraud individuals, and AI systems have been utilized in cyberattacks.
Deepfake technology has been deployed to impersonate senior US officials and corporate executives.
Criminals can leverage synthetic voices and videos to manipulate individuals into revealing sensitive information, granting access to computer systems, and facilitating unauthorized money transfers.
Demands substantial energy and resources
AI technology relies on physical data centres housing powerful computer chips, which require significant electricity and cooling systems.
The proliferation of data centres raises questions about electricity supply and whether governments possess adequate infrastructure to support large-scale AI projects.
For instance, a proposed data centre in Utah would consume more electricity than the entire state.
Beyond electricity concerns, environmental activists in the United States are highlighting the enormous water requirements for cooling data centre servers, particularly amid ongoing drought conditions in various regions.
Some residents near US data centres have also protested the constant operational noise. A March Gallup poll indicated that 71 percent of Americans oppose establishing AI data centres in their communities.
These concerns extend beyond the US and developed nations.
In Kenya, a proposed $1 billion data centre involving Microsoft and Emirati technology company G42 has attracted significant attention.
Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized the magnitude of the centre’s energy requirements, warning that infrastructure of that scale would necessitate substantial additional power generation capacity.
