Exploring New Insights into Human-to-Human Transmission of Dermatophilosis
According to a recent study published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal by French epidemiologists, dermatophilosis—a rare zoonotic bacterial infection—may now spread through human-to-human sexual contact. The research highlights a growing concern among men who have sex with men in Lyon and Paris, particularly those engaging in sexual activity in crowded settings.
The findings emphasized the importance of antibiotic treatment, often combined with topical antiseptic care, to manage symptoms such as pustules, crusts, and lesions across the body. Experts noted that while no confirmed human-to-human transmission chains were established, genomic similarity and shared sexual exposures suggest a link. Humidity and heat in sauna environments appear to have played a role in accelerating bacterial spread.
This development underscores the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures related to the transmission of this rare fungal-like condition through intimate settings.
