F1 2026 Standings: Updated Rankings After the Spanish Grand Prix

Antonelli dominated the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, further extending his lead in the drivers’ championship.

After starting from second following a deficit to pole-sitter Lando Norris, Antonelli initially struggled to pass the reigning champion. The 20-year-old ran off the track twice while attempting overtakes and remained stuck in second, allowing Norris to build a comfortable lead as the race unfolded.

The dynamic shifted on lap 15 when Lance Stroll retired his Aston Martin, triggering a virtual safety car that proved pivotal for Antonelli.

Norris was unfortunate with the timing; having already passed the pit entrance when the virtual safety car period began, he could not benefit from a free stop. Meanwhile, his rivals Antonelli and Max Verstappen, who had not yet reached the entrance, were able to pit immediately and gain an advantage.

By the time Norris finally entered the pit lane a lap later, the virtual safety car had ended. This forced him to make his stop under green flag conditions, costing him significantly more time than the free stop his rivals had enjoyed.

Having held a six-second lead over Antonelli before the ill-timed virtual safety car period, Norris dropped to fifth upon rejoining the track, while Antonelli seized the lead.

Ultimately, Antonelli claimed the first-ever victory at the brand-new Madring circuit, finishing four seconds ahead of Verstappen’s Red Bull. Norris salvaged a strong result with a podium finish in third place.

The victory marks the Mercedes driver’s eighth win of the season and his second consecutive, following a sensational comeback from 19th on the grid at his home race in Monza the previous weekend.

“It’s good to win,” Antonelli said after the race. “But it doesn’t feel as good because I believe Lando deserved to win today. Overall, though, you know, we’ll take it.”

Outside the top three, Charles Leclerc was the only Ferrari driver to finish, claiming P4, as his teammate Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire early due to brake issues.

George Russell finished fifth in the second Mercedes. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson, deputizing for the injured Isack Hadjar at Red Bull, added eight more points to his and the team’s tally with a sixth-place finish.

Franco Colapinto secured seventh place for Alpine, followed by Oscar Piastri’s McLaren and Arvid Lindblad’s Racing Bulls. Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the scorers by securing the final point available for Audi.

With the European leg of the season now concluded, Antonelli heads to Asia with an 81-point lead over his teammate and closest title rival, Russell.

Hamilton’s retirement in Spain leaves him with 191 points, placing him 101 points behind the leader in third.

Norris’ recent strong performances have helped him close the gap to Hamilton in the standings, with only five points separating them in the battle for third place.
