Ismail Kartal resigned as the head coach of Fenerbahce shortly after the Turkish club’s 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League.
The unexpected announcement was made during his post-match press conference, where he stated his intention to never return to the club where he had previously served as both a player and an assistant coach.
Kartal had returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth managerial stint in June 2026, marking the club’s first appearance in the Champions League in 18 years.
He leaves the club currently ranked ninth in the Turkish Super Lig, having secured two wins and suffered two defeats, following just one Champions League fixture.
“I have been here for three months. From the start of the season to this day, the training sessions and camps we conducted with the players, along with the dedication of our president, have been incredibly beneficial. Those were wonderful days,” Kartal stated.
“As of this evening, I congratulate my players and step down from my role.
“I made this decision to clear the path for my club. We arrived at this conclusion together as a unified team.
“Moving forward, to support Fenerbahce, my players, and future coaches, I have resigned with the firm intention of never returning.”
Club president Aziz Yildirim has rejected the 65-year-old manager’s resignation.
Yildirim said in a statement released on Fenerbahce’s official website, external: “Ismail Kartal remains in charge. The club must stand behind our coach. Until I depart, Ismail Kartal is the head coach of Fenerbahce.”
