Fiona Apple, known for her recent collaborations including a track on Cara Delevingne’s debut album and a single for Anya Taylor-Joy’s series Lucky, has shared insights into her current creative challenges in a poignant video shared on her roommate Zelda Hallman’s Instagram.
“It’s the middle of the night and I was just writing and I couldn’t sleep,” she explains. She elaborates:
I find myself increasingly uncomfortable with the constant stream of global tragedies. When I tried to write about it, I kept second-guessing myself—whether I’m the right person to address these issues or if my words will resonate correctly. I care deeply, but the pressure to represent others’ pain accurately leaves me paralyzed at times. It’s not that I’m ignoring it; I’m overwhelmed by the sheer scale and complexity of what’s happening.
Hallman’s accompanying caption expands on Fiona’s context, highlighting the specific struggles she’s referencing: conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, systemic violence against marginalized groups, attacks on transgender rights, threats to women’s health autonomy, anti-immigrant persecution, and attacks on voting rights and Indigenous communities. She notes:
Fiona is grappling with finding a truthful way to articulate these realities. Her reflections capture the profound emotional toll of attempting to respond to such widespread suffering through art.
The video underscores Fiona’s dedication to using her platform as an artist to confront these issues, despite her self-doubt and exhaustion. She acknowledges balancing this with other efforts but emphasizes that creating music remains her primary way of engaging with these challenges.
