German authorities detained a suspect on suspicion of arson after a major fire broke out at the Eagle’s Nest – Adolf Hitler’s former Nazi-era mountain retreat overlooking the Bavarian Alps. The blaze erupted at roughly 9:50 p.m. local time on Friday, triggering an alarm and drawing around 200 firefighters to the remote site.
No injuries were reported at the structure, known locally as the Kehlsteinhaus, according to police. Investigators are currently assessing whether the individual taken into temporary custody is linked to the incident.
Emergency responders described arriving to find the building fully engulfed in flames, with visible smoke and fire ascending into the night sky. Due to the retreat’s isolated Alpine setting at over 1,800 meters above sea level, firefighting operations faced logistical challenges, said police spokesperson Lisa Maier during a briefing on Saturday.
While the cause remains under investigation, German media outlets have cited sources suggesting arson as a working theory. According to Bild, officers came across a motorcyclist en route to the scene, who was later detained pending further inquiry.
Police indicated they would hold a press conference later on Saturday to provide updates. The Eagle’s Nest, constructed between 1937 and 1938 as a symbolic showcase of Hitler’s regime, has been preserved as both a historical landmark and public memorial since its post-war conversion into a restaurant and museum.
