Five Carolina Hurricanes Prospects Set to Develop in the KHL During the 2026-27 Season

The NHL returns to action on Sept. 29, but the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) gets underway this week, as is tradition right after August comes to a close. The 2026-27 campaign promises heightened excitement from the very first match day, as the league has eliminated the traditional Opening Cup game featuring the previous season’s finalists. Notably, the Hurricanes did not select any Russian players in the 2026 NHL Draft, meaning no fresh faces will appear in this year’s edition. With Carolina already possessing several intriguing unsigned prospects in North America, it remains worthwhile to examine the talent pipeline developing overseas.

Nikita Artamonov, Severstal Cherepovets

2025-26 stats: 53 games, 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists), minus-12, split between Torpedo and Neftekhimik

Widely regarded as the crown jewel of Carolina’s Russian prospect pool, Artamonov is a high-motor, highly skilled winger who plays with an edge and has demonstrated an ability to produce against men in the KHL at a young age. That said, the 2024 second-round pick struggled to replicate his outstanding 2024-25 campaign. After registering just one assist in sixteen regular-season games with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, he was subsequently loaned to Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.

His difficulties may have stemmed from adjusting to a new coach’s system, as Alexei Isakov replaced Igor Larionov behind Torpedo’s bench, though he also failed to make a strong impression at Neftekhimik, where he scored just three goals compared to the 22 he tallied in 2024-25. For 2026-27, he has been loaned out once more from Torpedo, this time to Severstal Cherepovets. The franchise has a strong reputation for developing younger talent, meaning he should see significant ice time, at least early in the season. From there, his performance will dictate his trajectory. His KHL contract expires next May.

Vladimir Grudinin, Severstal Cherepovets

2025-26 stats: 53 games, 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists), minus-7

Now a teammate of Artamonov at Severstal, Grudinin is an agile, smooth-skating left-handed defenseman who excels at transitioning the puck out of danger and playing a modern, fast-paced game, with puck control standing out as one of his key strengths. A fifth-round selection in 2022, Grudinin pairs his effortless skating with a strong comfort level on the puck. Though his offensive numbers have not been elite, he has demonstrated consistency and enters the season as a strong candidate for a breakout campaign with Severstal.

On the other side of the coin is his physicality. Standing just 5-foot-10 and 157 pounds, he does not yet have an NHL-ready frame, which limits his projection at the highest level. However, his skating and puck skills give him legitimate NHL potential. He could potentially make the jump to North America for the following season, as his current KHL deal concludes at the end of this campaign.

Alexander Rykov, Traktor Chelyabinsk

2025-26 stats: 56 games, 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists), plus-3

A smart, competitive forward with a strong work ethic along the boards and sound hockey sense, Rykov has progressed steadily through the Russian junior ranks (MHL) and the VHL before establishing himself in Traktor’s system. His development was evident last season, as he recorded eight goals and seven assists across 56 regular-season appearances. While his offensive production did not explode, both his output and his role within the team grew considerably.

Although he does not carry a superstar label, the former 2023 draft pick remains just 21 years old and has substantial room for further growth. Like Artamonov and Grudinin, his contract expires next May, though he may opt to sign another deal in Russia to continue refining his skills, which appears to be the most likely path for Rykov at this stage.

Andrei Krutov, Amur Khabarovsk

2025-26 stats: 21 games, 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists), minus-2

Much like Artamonov, Krutov struggled to make an impact at Torpedo despite an impressive track record in the junior ranks, ultimately being sent on loan to Amur Khabarovsk. There, he failed to leave a strong mark on the scoresheet with just four points to his credit, though his overall play was convincing enough for Amur to request his return on loan from Torpedo for the 2026-27 season.

This time around, Amur enters the season with a revamped roster and elevated expectations, a development that could work in Krutov’s favor. It will be interesting to see whether the forward can adapt to heavier minutes and establish consistency across the grind of a full KHL schedule in the Far East with Amur Khabarovsk. He has one additional year remaining on his current KHL deal.

Timur Kol, Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk

2025-26 stats: 35 games, 29 points (13 goals, 16 assists), plus-15 in the MHL; 8 games, 2 assists, even in the KHL

A towering defenseman with an NHL-ready frame, Kol had a strong season last term in the Russian junior ranks but saw limited opportunity in the KHL with Dynamo Moscow. As a result, he was selected by Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk in this summer’s draft. Though a less ambitious franchise, Neftekhimik can offer a player like Kol more ice time and room to grow.

His junior statistics speak for themselves, as Kol needs consistent KHL minutes to continue developing his game. At this stage, his focus must be on taking the next step in his progression. A club like Neftekhimik may be the ideal environment for that growth, given that head coach Igor Grishin favors an offensive style and has a track record of trusting young players. The team enjoyed a solid showing in 2025-26 and will be aiming for even greater success this season.

KHL Season Ahead

The KHL season begins on Sept. 5, with the final possible game scheduled for May 31, 2027. Other notable names worth monitoring for Hurricanes fans include Spartak goaltender Semyon Frolov, Dynamo Moscow defenseman Kurban Limatov, and Metallurg Magnitogorsk blueliner Alexander Siryatsky.
