On Tuesday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call described by Moscow as “constructive and very frank.”
The two leaders spoke for about an hour, according to Putin’s senior adviser Yuriy Ushakov.
The Trump administration has not publicly commented, though Witkoff earlier said “substantive progress was made” without elaborating.
Ushakov said on Saturday that Trump’s envoys were briefed in Moscow on “significant advances” by Russian forces on the battlefield, with the Kremlin stressing its objectives would be achieved.
Meanwhile, Zelensky said he expected the war to continue into winter after meeting Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv on Sunday—their first visit to Ukraine.
Zelensky told reporters that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and America would meet soon to continue discussions, and he called for a trilateral meeting with Russia and the US.
Putin has shown no sign of backing down from his maximalist demands, including further territorial concessions from Ukraine.
