On Wednesday, a helicopter crashed at a tourist site in northern Kenya, resulting in the deaths of five U.S. citizens and a senior Ecuadorian government official, according to the authorities.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority reported that the accident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, a remote, arid region known for its national parks and wildlife reserves.
The crash happened while the Eurocopter was en route to the Ewaso Nyiro River, an area that hosts several upscale wildlife tourist camps, the authority noted.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed the fatalities of five Americans, though no further details about the victims were disclosed.
Ecuador’s presidential office announced on social media that Michele Sensi‑Contugi, the nation’s director of national intelligence, and his wife, Stephany Holligan, were among the deceased.
Kenya’s Transport Ministry is investigating the cause of the crash, the aviation authority said, though its statement did not comment on the helicopter crew’s whereabouts.
The Kenya Red Cross is supporting search and recovery operations, but efforts are being impeded by an ongoing fire at the crash site and challenging terrain.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, with many visitors exploring the country via vans or specialized off‑road vehicles, while others are attracted to luxury camps accessible by private aircraft or helicopters.
Tour operators provide helicopter excursions to the summit of Mount Ololokwe for sunrise viewing and breakfast.
